This program will feature performances of six songs that were common in protests and marches of the Civil Rights movement. In addition to the music we will hear the stories behind the songs, their writers, and the people named in the lyrics. Lyrics will be available for download from the event page so you can sing along at home
About the Speaker
Melissa Edd is a musician, educator, and activist in the high country area. Originally from Jacksonville, North Carolina, Melissa graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, focusing on the intersections between Music and Sociology. A classically trained musician, Melissa actively performs on viola, piano, and voice as a solo artist, as well as in the Boone-based band, Mexican Hot Chocolate. She has spent her life working with a range of children, from the early Montessori preschool classroom to the residential group home setting with teens. She has a passion for art and wellness, and honors the healing power of music.
