This talk will examine the poem “If They Should Come For Us” from a larger collection of poetry by Fatimah Asghar, titled If They Come For Us. We will explore the themes of who are “our people”, the power of community, the importance of knowing our histories, loyalty, love, and the ties that bind us together. As well as making connections with the themes and the recent events going on in the United States and the World.
Bio: Brittany Twitty is from a small town called Columbus, North Carolina, which is just down the mountain from Asheville. She is currently enrolled in the Masters of Social Work program at Appalachian State. She intends to pursue a career in community education around mental health and social justice, particularly within communities of color.
