2024 Summer Internships

Position: Program and Outreach Intern

The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum is a non-profit museum (on the corner of Ginny Stevens Lane and Main Street) in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Its mission is to promote visual arts and history and to celebrate the rich heritage of the mountains. The Programs and Outreach Intern is exposed to all facets of public program development and promotion for a Museum or not for profit organization. During the 120 hour period, the intern will:

  1. Learn how to manage an institutional calendar

  2. Responsible for a public program:

    1. Development

    2. Marketing

    3. Set-up

    4. Execution

    5. Clean-up

  3. Create and distribute press releases 

  4. Research and apply for at least one grant

  5. Assist in collecting and transcribing oral histories

  6. Create an oral history audio collage for the BRAHM listening station

The ideal candidate will have exceptional verbal communication skills, strong written communication, public speaking experience, flexible schedule, demonstrated interest in museums or not-for-profit institutions. This position requires some nights and weekend work. Those dates will be set before the beginning of the internship. 

Interns are expected to be available by June 1, 2024 with work completed by August 15, 2024.

Position: Special Events Intern

The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum is a non-profit museum (on the corner of Ginny Stevens Lane and Main Street) in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Its mission is to promote visual arts and history and to celebrate the rich heritage of the mountains. The Special Events Intern is exposed to event development, promotion, and facilitation for a Museum or not for profit organization. During the 120 hour period, the intern will:

  1. Experience the nuances of organizing a gala with live and silent auctions for a Museum.

  2. Be responsible for facilitating and/or aiding:

    1. Volunteers

    2. Marketing

    3. Set-up

    4. Participating at the event 

    5. Database management

  3. Work closely with Membership to understand institutional rhythms of communication. 

  4. Learn the process of soliciting organizations for support or sponsorship.

The ideal candidate will have exceptional attention to detail, an ability to converse engagingly with a variety of demographics, strong verbal and written communication, flexible schedule, and interest in museums or not-for-profit institutions. 

Important dates: June 20th, with possible evening hours. June 21st, morning through 2 pm, July 19, 1 pm to 5 pm, and July 20, 4 pm to 11 pm. 

Interns are expected to be available by June 1, 2024 with work completed by August 15, 2024.

Position: Education Center Intern

The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum is a non-profit museum (on the corner of Ginny Stevens Lane and Main Street) in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Its mission is to promote visual arts and history and to celebrate the rich heritage of the mountains.

The Education Center Intern is exposed to all facets of hands-on public program development and promotion for a Museum or not-for-profit organization. During the 120 hour period, the intern will:

  1. Learn how to manage an institutional calendar

  2. Be Responsible for a public youth and/or adult educational program: 

    1. Development

    2. Marketing

    3. Set-up

    4. Execution

    5. Clean-up

  3. Create and distribute press releases 

The ideal candidate will have exceptional verbal communication skills, strong written communication, experience working with adults and children, flexible schedule, demonstrated interest in museums, art education or not-for-profit institutions. This position may require some evening or weekend work. Those dates will be set before the beginning of the internship.

Position: Blowing Rock Plein Air Festival Intern

The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum is a non-profit museum (on the corner of Ginny Stevens Lane and Main Street) in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Its mission is to promote visual arts and history and to celebrate the rich heritage of the mountains. The Blowing Rock Plein Air Festival is a 5-day event held each August, drawing 100 artists from across the United States, and over 600 buyers from the region.

The Blowing Rock Plein Air Festival Intern is exposed to all facets of hands-on public event development and promotion for a Museum, special event, or not for profit organization.  During the 120 hour period, the intern will:

  1. Be Responsible for public programs related to the festival:

    1. Marketing

    2. Set-up

    3. Execution

    4. Clean-up

    5. Database management

  2. Create and distribute press releases 

  3. Photograph event in progress

  4. Interface with artists, community, and art buyers

The ideal candidate will have exceptional verbal communication skills, strong written communication, experience working with the public, flexible schedule, demonstrated interest in museums, art handling or not-for-profit institutions. This position may require some evening or weekend work. Those dates will be set before the beginning of the internship. 

Interns are expected to be available by July 1, 2024 with work completed by August 30, 2024.

Position: Exhibitions and Collections Intern

Blowing Rock Art & History Museum (BRAHM) seeks an Exhibitions and Collections Intern for the summer of 2024 to assist the department in the administrative support of a number of upcoming projects. 

Responsibilities include:

- Coordinating incoming and outgoing loans

- Reviewing and updating collections files and database records

- Assisting with gallery preparation, including label-making, patching and painting, laying vinyl, and other related tasks

- Producing object condition reports 

- Addressing storage and handling of BRAHM permanent-collection objects

- Other related administrative tasks as assigned

Preferred skills and abilities: 

- Completed or in-progress degree in art history, arts management, museum studies, or a related subject

- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills

- Previous experience in a collections database (PastPerfect, The Museum System, etc.)

- Previous experience with art handling in a museum or gallery setting

- Previous experience in gallery preparation or exhibition installation

- Ability to lift at least 30 pounds 

This internship will consist of assigned short-term tasks and long-term projects as well as at least one self-designed project developed in consultation with the Exhibitions and Collections team. Position: Curatorial Intern

Blowing Rock Art & History Museum (BRAHM) seeks a Curatorial Intern for the summer of 2024 to assist its Curator of Exhibitions & Collections. This emerging curator or art historian will provide administrative and research support for a number of upcoming curatorial projects related to 19th and early 20th-century American painting.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preliminary archival and scholarly research

  • Correspondence with peer institutions and galleries

  • Artist and loan identification

  • Checklist and label formatting

  • Document transcription

  • Some object-related and art historical writing

  • Other related administrative and curatorial tasks as assigned

Preferred skills and abilities: 

  • Knowledge of American art and/or 19th century painting

    • Familiarity with landscape theory, Tonalism, and Elliott Daingerfield are a plus

  • Current or recent art history or arts management student

  • Ability to perform scholarly and administrative research/tasks

  • Excellent interpretive and analytical writing skills

  • Professional correspondence experience

  • Database proficiency

  • Experience in Adobe Suite is a plus

This internship will consist of assigned short-term tasks and long-term projects as well as at least one self-designed project developed in consultation with the Curator.
