Curator’s Corner: Marjorie & Louis (Mint Juleps)
When Louis Lundean and Marjorie Daingerfield weren't traveling or spending the winters in their New York studio, they could often be found enjoying summertime in the mountains at the Daingerfield home of Westglow in Blowing Rock. One article in the Watauga Democrat, released in August of 1959, describes a large gathering at the house.
"Mr. and Mrs. Worth Plyler, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Lundean, and Mr. and Mrs. Echolas Hollomon were hosts for a mint julep party August 8 at the Plyler's home 'Westglow.' Three hundred guests were present." These mint julep parties were considered very popular gatherings in Blowing Rock.
Why mint juleps? Well, this drink (and it being the focus of the party) says a lot about the culture of the time. It's a cocktail consisting of bourbon, sugar, water, crushed or shaved ice, and fresh mint. The drink is often associated with the American South and the Kentucky Derby in particular. Louis and Marjorie were both avid horseback riders and fans of the Derby, so it's safe to say they embraced the lifestyle to its fullest.
