Let’s express ourselves by creating improvisational art inspired by music in the style of Wassily Kandinsky. This is part two of a two week exploration of Kandinsky’s art.

About the Artist:

Wassily Kandinsky was born on December 16, 1866 in Moscow, Russia. He grew up playing multiple musical instruments. He was inspired by the colors of nature and sounds of music. He felt that music could be imagined as colors, and that colors and shapes could be interpreted as sounds and feelings. He once said that "Everything starts with a dot". His other works were often abstract, and inspired by music. He even named many pieces in a way that is reminiscent of music, such as using words like “composition” or “improvisation” in the titles.

Check out last week’s post, where we explored color by making a color study of circles in rectangles.

Materials:

  • Any colorful art medium, such as paint, crayons, oil pastels, or markers.

  • Paper

  • Brush and water if using paint

  • Music (or just use the music in the video as inspiration!)

Watch Ms. Jennifer create her Kandinsky inspired color study here:

Instructions:

  1. Divide your paper in half.

  2. Begin one artwork inspired by the first piece of music. Listen to the rhythm, notes, and mood of the music, and try to make marks that match.

  3. Now listen to a second piece of music and create a second artwork to match it.

  4. Play the music and show the artwork to a family member. Can they guess which goes with which?
