Art Lesson w/ Ms. Jennifer: Alma Woodsey Thomas

In honor of Black History Month and upcoming Valentine Holiday, let’s revisit the work of Alma Woodsey Thomas, and create a heart painting in her style.

About the Artist

Let’s learn more about Alma Woodsey Thomas, and you can follow Ms. Jennifer create a Thomas inspired painting here: https://www.blowingrockmuseum.org/athome/alma-lesson

Materials:

  • Paper

  • Markers

  • Optionally, you can create your heart using paper, paints, brush, and water, as in the video lesson linked above. Or use small squares of paper to create a heart mosaic.

Instructions:

  1. Draw a small solid heart in the center of your paper using markers.

  2. Change to a new color, and make a slightly larger heart around the first one, using dotted or dashed lines.

  3. Continue using different colored markers and making larger concentric hearts. Experiment with making the dashes smaller or larger.

For Doodlebugs Ages 2-5:

Materials:

  • Paper

  • Markers

Instructions:

  1. Draw a small heart in the center of the Doodlebug’s paper.

  2. Allow them to try to trace the heart, then draw concentric hearts on their paper using different colors of marker. Say the name of each color as they use it.

  3. Encourage the child to make some of the concentric hearts using dotted or dashed lines.
