Elliot Daingerfield: His Art and Life in North Carolina

This exhibition, Elliott Daingerfield: Art and Life in North Carolina, is devoted to an individual who has been described as the most important artist in North Carolina. Elliott Daingerfield, born in Harper’s ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), on march 26, 1859,moved with his family to Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 1861, after his father was selected by General Robert E. Lee to command the Confederate Arsenal there. Young Elliott was raised in Fayetteville after the Civil War and during the era of reconstruction, struggling with his family to survive during a challenging period in the state’s history. He remained in Fayetteville until 1880, when he moved to New York City to study art.
