The Spaces Between: Paintings by Elizabeth Shanahan
June 2016
The works in this exhibition belong to a larger series Shanahan has been working on for several years. In evaluating the body of the works displayed, Shanahan describes her relationship to them as embodiments of shifting emotional states of being. “My instinctive reaction to these works is that each is about a momentary emotional state, experienced or remembered at the time of painting, but that never seems to satisfy the demands of the question. Today, I would offer that these paintings as a series serve as an emotional self portrait at those moments in time.”
