BLOWING ROCK — The artists at BRAHM’s new exhibit, “SHIP/SHAPE: Page Laughlin and David Finn” have been getting ready for opening day on Jan. 25.

Page Laughlin and David Finn’s work centers around an ever-present icon in culture and language: ships.

The seed of this exhibit was planted through Laughlin’s growing fascination with ships. What began as a curiosity soon evolved into a compelling exploration of how ships symbolize more than just modes of transportation.

“Once I started looking for ships, I started seeing them everywhere,” Laughlin said. “In playgrounds, on Netflix shows, in junk shops, and it was this very present image that seemed so present, and it was overlooked.”

Laughlin began this series of paintings 3 years ago after digging deeper into their role in shaping our culture and language and as symbols of values and exploration.

The couple soon began work on their first curated exhibit together in 28 years, and the result is two approaches to contemplating contemporary issues through the ever-present form of a ship.

“We’re both project-based artists, so we get certain ideas and concepts, and then they tend to occupy our work and shift the work pretty significantly,” Laughlin said.
