Exploring Tonalist Painting with Kyle Buckland
Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Tonalism, taught by nationally acclaimed landscape painter Kyle Buckland. This workshop will guide you through the core principles of this evocative style, including limited palettes, close values, and creating a sense of mood and atmosphere through subtle color variations.
The mornings will feature a live demonstration, followed by an afternoon of dedicated painting time with individual guidance from Kyle. All skill levels are welcome. Participants choose from acrylic or oil painting, the supply list follows. This is a great opportunity to learn about the history of Tonalism and develop your artistic skills.
About the artist:
Kyle Buckland is a nationally acclaimed contemporary impressionist painter living and working in the Southern Appalachian region of Southwest Virginia. His style of painting, which is deeply rooted in the fundamental philosophies regarding Impressionism, is as unique as his subject matter is inviting. His work has been featured in Plein Air Magazine on multiple occasions. He has won numerous awards, conducted paint-outs, and taught painting classes at every level, including instructing at The Plein Air Convention and Expo for the past four years. His work is represented in hundreds of private, public, and corporate collections around the world, and in 2021 he was inducted into the prestigious Plein Air Painters of the Southeast (P.A.P.-S.E.) .

Paint (Oil or Acrylic) *I use Royal Talons
Permanent Madder Deep or Rose Madder
Permanent Red Light
Permanent Yellow Light
Phthalo Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Burnt Sienna
Yellow Ochre
Ivory Black
Titanium White
Brushes: Flat Bristle Brushes ...variety of sizes between #1- #12 preferably 10 or more brushes
Palette Knife: At least one small palette knife
Easel: Sturdy portable easel (BRAHM has a limited number.)
Palette: A mixing surface for your paint. Most plein air easels come with a suitable palette. Make sure your palette is large enough. A 9"x12" or large palette is recommended.
Canvas: 3 canvases 11'x14" or larger. You may use stretched canvas or canvas boards, cotton or linen.
Paper Towels: A decent quality paper towel such as Bounty or Viva is recommended.
Trash bag: For disposing of soiled paper towels.
Proper Clothing: Avoid wearing bright, colorful clothes as these will reflect color back into your painting while you are working.
Backpack or Tote: To transport materials into the studio
****ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDED MATERIALS FOR OIL PAINTERS
Medium: I use a mixture of 3/4 Galkyd Painting medium with 1/4 Gamsol Odorless mineral spirits.
Paint Thinner: I recommend Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits.
Medium Cup: A cup to hold your medium so you can dip your brush into it as you work. This should sit on your easel or palette for easy access while painting.
Brush Washer: This will be filled with Gamsol and can be used to swish/clean your brushes in while you work. This should sit or hang on your easel for easy access while painting. I use the stainless-steel type of brush washers. Please keep lid on when not in use to cut down on fumes.
A Wet Canvas/Panel Holder: Some way of holding your wet paintings for when you transport them. This could be a simple cardboard box or a fancy Raymar Wet Panel Carrier or anything in between that works for you.

Water container you can fill with water to thin your paints with as you work.
Spray Bottle: a spray bottle full of water for spraying your palette as you work. This will prevent your paint from drying out.
