Jean-Michel Basquiat was an influential African-American artist who rose to fame during the 1980s. Basquiat was known for his loose, improvisational method. Basquiat’s work helped elevate street and graffiti artists into the realm of the international gallery scene. His spray-painted crowns and scribbled words referenced everything from his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, to jazz and hip-hop, political issues, pop-culture icons, and Biblical verse. Celebrate Caribbean Heritage Month by creating your own Basquiat-inspired self-portrait.
