Focus Tour for BRAHM Members: The New Woman Artist

Focus Tour for BRAHM Members: The New Woman Artist

Get a glimpse of the formidable courage and perseverance required of aspiring women artists during the era of American Impressionism. Facing the same resistance from a conservative art community as their male counterparts, they also shouldered heavy burdens of social disapproval and gender bias as they sought to follow their unconventional aspirations. Triumphantly, each female artist featured in the Alexander and Wilson collections managed to achieve an influential career, economic independence, and a successful self-governing lifestyle. With docent Madge Megliola, you are invited to explore the work, lives, and professional careers of these inspiring pioneers who personified the very essence of the New Woman, becoming a powerful force in art, enterprise, and the evolution of gender equality.

Focus Tours are a new benefit of BRAHM membership! Developed and led by the museum's insightful and passionate docent team, these deep dives into the museum's current exhibitions will highlight relevant special topics and themes, revealing the complexity of the artworks on view and the histories behind them.
