Plein Air Basics
Painting outside isn’t just about enjoying the sun and the breeze, although that’s certainly a big part of the fun. It’s also a great way to learn from direct observation, whether that means a landscape, a cityscape, or even something like a portrait. Plein air painting workshops are at the top of my list of favorite things to teach. I’ve traveled far and near painting beaches, cityscapes, and landscapes and found one of the best ways to improve your plein air painting skills is by painting lots of small studies.
This workshop will provide you with insight on the basics of painting en plein air including materials and equipment, choosing your subject, and creating paintings with strong compositions, color harmony, and atmospheric perspective through the practice of painting a series of small studies with a limited palette. Whatever your skill level or painting style, let me help sharpen your skills and broaden your knowledge. This workshop promises to be a life-enhancing experience!
This group is for beginner to intermediate painters. There is another group for advanced painters. There will be demos and lectures each day with time to paint as well as one-on-one and group critiques and discussions.
Katie will be working in oils or gouache but all mediums are welcome.
Please come prepared with your food and beverages for the day as well as sunscreen, bug spray, hat, umbrella, and art supplies below.
