About the Workshop

This course will cover the basics of book arts and bookbinding, helping students learn new forms and structures to create books that can be used as journals, scrapbooks, presents or just beautiful objects! Students will learn a variety of bookbinding styles and paper folding techniques, and will be able to cover their books with decorative papers or their own hand-painted papers. The first three classes will teach students different types of basic book-binding (single section signature binding, Japanese binding, pocket books, accordion books), and students will also be shown a range of decorative techniques to personalize their mini-masterpieces. The final project will guide students through the planning process to complete an animal-shaped book similar to the instructor's work with elephants, oysters, and bats.
