Crafting with the Southern Highland Craft Guild | Cherokee Wheels basket

Join Susan B. Taylor & John Roller in this three hour workshop as we weave a small open basket on a lathe-turned, cherry base. Using several sizes of reed, students will learn to twine, triple-twine, weave individual rows, and to set up a space for embellishing with “Cherokee Wheels”. The basket will be finished with a sturdy, lashed rim, with a filler. This basket is useful in every room in the house, and is created to last a lifetime! All materials for one basket are included.

Limited seating available. An 80% refund will be issued if the participant cancels by 5/20/2019. For cancellations made less than one week prior to the event, BRAHM will issue a refund IF the museum is able to fill the vacated spot.

This workshop is appropriate for Ages 12+ and adults.

Cost is $70 for BRAHM members/$75 for nonmembers.

Southern Strands: North Carolina Fiber Art is made possible by a grant from the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area Partnership.

About the Instructor

Susan is a native of the coal mining village of Shady Spring, West Virginia. As a child, she watched her mother, Mae Alice Taylor, weave functional baskets. In 2002, after back surgery limited Mae's mobility, it was time for mother to pass to daughter her precious knowledge of the art of basket weaving. Susan describes that time as "finally coming home". The combination of fibers and artistry had opened a new avenue of self-discovery for her. Susan's baskets are known for their quality, attention to detail, and visual excitement. A 'natural' in 3-dimensional arts, Susan also enjoys pottery, gourd projects, jewelry making, bead work, wood turning, and felting wool.
