Art Lesson with Ms. Jennifer: Georgia O’Keeffe

Draw and Paint a Georgia O'Keeffe inspired skull and flower with Ms. Jennifer at BRAHM.

For this week’s weekly artist inspiration, we are looking at artist Georgia O’Keeffe.

First, watch this short video of a book titled, “My Name is Geogia” to learn more about the artist.

"Cow’s Skull with Calico Roses" was inspired by a drought that caused the death of many animals. O’Keeffe witnessed the drought and was intrigued by the animal bones that she found. She knew she would want to paint images of them one day.

“To me they are as beautiful as anything I know…the bones seem to cut sharply to the center of something that is keenly alive on the desert even tho’ it is vast and empty and untouchable.” (Source: AIC)

Art Creation Guidance: Follow Along with Ms. Jennifer!

Let's recreate one of her iconic skull paintings, "Ram's Head with Hollyhock, 1935 "

Materials Needed:

  • thick paper,

  • black crayon or Sharpie Marker,

  • watercolor paint,

  • water cup,

  • brush,

  • paper towel or kleenex.

Steps (more details found in video)

  • Start by making a large letter "T" in the center of your paper, leaving room for horns or antlers above.

  • Make the vertical part of the "T" a dotted line.

  • Now make two wavy lines coming down from each side of the "T" top to the bottom of the dotted line.

  • Make eye sockets and nostrils.

  • Last, add antlers.

  • Now it's time to paint. Watch for techniques to make a blue sky with puffy clouds using wet into wet and a paper towel.

Let's recreate her beautiful painting "Ladder to the Moon"

  1. Start by drawing brown or grey mountains at the bottom of a paper.

  2. Now, paint or color the rest of the paper light blue. While that dries:

  3. Cut out a sliver of a moon.

  4. Cut two long strips of paper for the sides of the ladder, and many small pieces for the rungs.

  5. Glue it all onto your sky.
