Curator’s Corner: Marjorie & Louis (Martha Graham)

IMG_1359_cropped.jpg

This bronze sculpture of Martha Graham was sculpted by Marjorie Daingerfield and is one of many of her featured works in our current exhibition, "Marjorie & Louis." Martha Graham was an American modern dancer and choreographer. Her style, the "Graham technique," reshaped American dance and is still taught worldwide. She has been referred to as the "Picasso of Dance" due to her extensive influence on the growth and evolution of modern dance. Marjorie and her peers (women, in particular) found great inspiration and feminist empowerment in Martha Graham's work, which may have driven Marjorie to create this commemorative sculpture in admiration. While the sculpture is strong and still, Marjorie has communicated the hint and illusion of movement through the fluidity of the arms and upper torso of the figure.
