Weekly Artist Inspiration: Laurel Burch

Art Lesson: Create your own Laurel Burch Cat

About the Artist: Laurel Burch was an inspiring artist who overcame great challenges to create her cheerful and fun artwork. She spent many years in bed or in hospitals recovering from injuries. Learn more about the passion and drive of Laurel in this short video.

You might recognize this image of cats, which were her most popular theme.

"These are my favorite messengers of goodwill! Wit, whimsy and wisdom sparkle behind teal eyes, purple tails, and brilliant rainbow bodies. The first subject I chose to create a whole theme around, it was as much the people that 'belong' to cats that inspired me, as my love of cats, themselves!" - Laurel Birch

Art Creation Guidance

1) Get inspired! Take a look at the different themes Laurel Burch explored in her paintings. Which is your favorite? How does it make you feel?

2) Gather Materials. You can use your at-home art materials to create your own Laurel Burch cat.

  • Heavy drawing paper (You'll only need thicker paper if you're using paints. Heavy drawing paper, watercolor paper, or cover stock work great.)

  • Oil pastel

  • Watercolors

Please note: if you don't have the above materials at home, regular drawing paper, pencil, crayons, and/or markers would also work fine.

For a special touch, try drawing on black construction paper with oil pastels, gel markers, chalk pastels or construction paper crayons.

3) Create your cat! Follow along with Ms. Jennifer on this guided video lesson
