Curator’s Corner: Marjorie & Louis (Duo Exhibition)
Our exhibition, "Marjorie & Louis," isn't the first time that Marjorie Daingerfield and Louis Lundean have had their artwork in the same exhibition. In 1951, the two had an exhibition of Louis' oil paintings and watercolors along with Marjorie's sculpture at the Rockefeller Center Office in New York City.
A list of works from this exhibition remains, with some of Louis' works titled, "Saddle Back Cabin on the Yonahlossee, North Carolina" and "Harvest Time in the Piedmont," as well as "Westglow, Blowing Rock, NC." Louis' work represented the south in the big city!
One of Marjorie's works, a marble portrait of Mrs. Albert (Lucy) Gins, was in this NYC exhibition. (A separate study of this work is now on display in our exhibition at BRAHM.) It was also exhibited at the Mint Museum in Charlotte in 1962. Marjorie used this portrait, which is only about 1/2 inch thick, to practice bas-relief, a sculpture technique in which figures and/or other design elements are just barely more prominent than the (overall flat) background. You'll be able to come see this sculpture at the museum when we reopen to the public!
