About the Artist:

Amedeo Clemente Modigliani, born in 1884, was an Italian Jewish painter and sculptor who worked mainly in France. He studied painting from live models in classical schools. Then he created his signature style of making longer faces and necks, which became his hallmark in both his paintings and sculptures. He was known to do over 100 sketches in one day! He was friends with early cubist artists Picasso and Brancusi. He died of tuberculosis at only 35 years old, but left his mark on the art world in that short time.

Art Creation Guidance:

Instructions:

  1. After studying the art of Modigliani, find a large piece of paper to work with. Working with oil pastel or chalk pastel on dark colored paper has a wonderful effect. Fold or lightly mark the paper in fourths vertically and half horizontally as shown in the tutorial image. Draw an oval for the head, beginning with the chin at the center of your paper, and making the top of the oval near the top of the paper. Leave room for a hairdo or hat!

  2. Draw two vertical lines for the neck.

  3. Draw shoulders and a shirt collar.

  4. Add features such as eyes and a mouth.

  5. Make an upside down numeral 7 for the nose.

  6. Customize the hair, clothing, hat, and background to match your character.

  7. Now fill in the skin tones with oil pastel, crayons, chalk, paint, or colored pencil. Remember to blend multiple colors - our skin is not one flat, universal tone! Don’t be afraid to add bits of purple, pink, blue or green in your skin tones.

  8. Last, emphasize the outline of the chin and face with a bold, dark line.
