Philip Moose was born in Newton, NC in 1921, but had a summer home south of Blowing Rock in the area that is now Artist Valley. He studied art at the National Academy of Design on a fellowship and traveled all over the world using grants that he was awarded for his art. Moose was a modest man and never hired an agent to promote his work. He is most known by locals for teaching at Davidson College and Charlotte's Queens College from 1956 to 1967. He used many mediums and techniques, ranging from realistic oil paintings and watercolors, to abstract work and collages. He considered Blowing Rock to be his home where he lived until he retired. He died in Newton, NC in 2001.
We have many works by Philip Moose and we also have a catalog of his works, which includes an in-depth biography. This catalog is available to read in our library and purchase in our gift shop.
