Pishga Forrest Pottery and Nonconnah Potter were founded by Walter B. Stephen in 1926 in Skyland North Carolina. Stephen first took up pottery in 1904. With no formal training he and his mother produced slip decorated pottery of excellent merit. Stephen pioneered crystalline glazes and was the first in the South to master the technique. His products have been compared to Wedgewood China for their beauty and craftsmanship. Stephens hand painted each piece with rustic scenes in porcelain. Everything in his shop was built by himself including the tools and the buildings. Stephen was an early member of the Highland Craft Guild. The shop has been closed due to the passing of Stephen and his family members, and all objects have been donated to the North Carolina Museum of History.‚Äč
