Richard Ritter was born in 1941 in Michigan. He began his art career as an advertising illustrator. He received a BFA from the College for Creative Subjects. It was at the CCS that Ritter discovered glass was the media he had been searching for his entire life. After graduating CCS he opened a glass blowing studio in Birmingham, Michigan. At first he was only able to melt down old wine and beer bottles, but eventually with the help of Joel Philip Myers, he was able to get multi-colored glass donated. During the summer of 1971, he attended a glass course a Penland. After another stint in Michigan Richard and his wife Jan moved to Mitchell County, NC.
