Exploring the Palette Knife for Landscape + Still Life
Join us for a three-day workshop exploring the use of the palette knife in your painting with Robin Wellner. The knife can add looseness and freedom to your paintings. Some of the advantages of the palette knife besides mixing paint:
-Easy to clean
-Great for texture and clean color
-The edge creates great lines, trees, etc.
-You can paint over wet layers without the paint mixing like a brush
You can explore a whole painting with only a knife, or use the knife only for accents.
Day one will include an introduction to the knife and the limited palette we'll use. Together we'll do color charts and become familiar with the limited palette and our knives. Later we’ll do a small still life - 5x7, 6x8 or 8x10 to start using the knife and the color palette.
Day Two we'll start a landscape from a photo. I’ll bring some reference photos, but if you have one that you’d like to paint feel free to bring it!
Day Three we’ll do a more elaborate still life. If you have some things you’d like to paint - flowers, vases, pitchers, etc. - please bring them.
Materials List:
Oil Paints: Titanium White, Cad Lemon, Indian Yellow, Cad Red Light, Alizarin
Crimson OR Quinacradone Magenta, Ultramarine Blue and Prussian Blue
(or a limited palette of your choosing )
Palette Knives: Creative Mark 35T and 21T and any teardrop shaped knives
you'd like to bring --- no plastic knives please.
Silicon Bowl Scraper - I like Zoe and Chloe from Amazon
Gamsol - and a can or container for it
Galkyd Gel
Cold Wax - Gamblin or Dorlands
An assortment of brushes - small to large - preferably bristle
Paper towels
Palette or paper palette
Panels or canvases to paint on -5x7, 6x8, 8x8, 8x10, 11x14, 12x16 - any sizes
you would like to try. Please bring one panel that’s at least 12x16 to do your
color chart . I would also recommend that you bring a pad of canvas paper.
Artist Statement:
I am an avid painter — of people, landscapes, and the occasional still life. My fascination with painting faces has led to some national awards and inclusion in national shows with the American Women Artists, Oil Painters of America, and Richeson 75 Figure and Portrait International Show. I paint with some fellow artists from life on a weekly basis in Charlotte, NC, where my husband and I live. My training evolved from Fine Arts in college to numerous workshops with renowned artists such as Dawn Whitelaw, Robert Liberace, Rich Nelson, Chris Saper, and numerous others. I happily show my landscape paintings at Blowing Rock Frameworks and Gallery.
In addition to my keen interest in painting, I love to teach. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the lights go on for a student when they “get it” in a workshop. The workshops I teach include a Zorn Palette Portrait Workshop, Palette Knife Workshop, and Plein Air using the Knife.

Please Note: Limited seating is available. An 80% refund will be issued if the participant cancels two weeks prior to the event. For cancellations made less than two weeks prior to the event, BRAHM will issue a refund IF the museum is able to fill the vacated spot.
